1. What is the Average Salary in the Netherlands?

As of February 2024, the gross average salary in the Netherlands is around €44,000 per year, which is approximately €3,666 per month before taxes. That’s around €180 per day or €22.54 per hour, assuming a 40-hour workweek and 6 weeks of holiday per year.

The Netherlands is one of the top 5 European countries for the highest average salary. Compared to the EU average of €28,217 (2023), the Dutch wage is a lot higher. The figures are from the Centraal Planbureau (CPB), the Dutch national statistics office which tracks the country’s economy.

In cities like Amsterdam salaries are higher because of the higher cost of living and more job opportunities. While figures can vary, some estimate the average wage in Amsterdam to be around €54,000 per year or €4,500 per month. Others like Werk Zoeken report an average of €41,664 per year or €3,472 per month, which is closer to the national average.

2. What is the Minimum Wage in the Netherlands?

As of July 2024, the statutory minimum wage in the Netherlands is €13.68 per hour for employees 21 and older, which is around €2,373 per month based on a 40-hour workweek. The minimum wage is adjusted twice a year – January 1 and July 1 – and varies per age.

For employees under 21, the minimum wage is scaled according to age:

15 years old: €4.10 per hour 16 years old: €5.48 per hour 17 years old: €6.86 per hour 18 years old: €8.24 per hour 19 years old: €9.62 per hour 20 years old: €10.94 per hour

The Dutch minimum wage law applies to full-time and part-time employees and is based on a standard full-time workweek of 36 to 40 hours, depending on the sector. Also, note that holiday pay (usually 8% of gross salary) is often included in the employment contract.

This is the minimum to live and to prevent exploitation, but many earn above this, especially in jobs or in cities like Amsterdam.

3. What is the 30% Ruling in the Netherlands?

The 30% ruling is a tax benefit provided by the Dutch government to attract foreign skilled workers to the Netherlands. If you move to the Netherlands from another country, you will face a higher cost of living. To help cover these “extraterritorial costs”, your employer can pay you a part of your salary tax-free. Under the 30% ruling, your employer can pay you up to 30% of your salary (including these costs) without taxing it. This makes it easier for international workers to settle in the Netherlands
