5. What Is Superannuation and What Does It Cost Employers?

Superannuation is Australia’s compulsory retirement savings system. It is not deducted from an employee’s take-home pay, it is an additional cost paid by the employer on top of the agreed salary.

The Superannuation Guarantee (SG) rate is 12% from 1 July 2025, meaning employers must contribute 12% of an employee’s ordinary time earnings into a super fund.

Example: An employee earning AUD 100,000/year costs the employer AUD 12,000 in super contributions on top, making the true employment cost AUD 112,000 per year before any other on-costs.

Note from 1 July 2026: the FY2025-26 tax rate on the second bracket (AUD 18,201–45,000) drops from 16% to 15%, providing modest relief for low-to-middle income earners. If you’re hiring from outside Australia, PamGro manages super fund registration, quarterly contributions, and compliance reporting on your behalf, at 12% SG rate compliance guaranteed.
